COURSE DESCRIPTION
Evidence-Based Dentistry (EBD), through a rigorous analysis of the scientific literature, enables dental professionals to provide high-quality care and ensure optimal outcomes for patients. Students will become familiar with scientific literature and gain confidence in applying the scientific rationale to support clinical decision-making in dental practice.
This is a residential course delivered entirely in Malta. It is aimed at students who wish to further their studies in the dental and/or medical field within the European context, and who will be residing in Malta for the duration of their studies.
The course will be offered to two separate cohorts: one cohort will follow the full programme in Italian, while another cohort will follow the programme entirely in English. As outlined below, the applicable admission requirements will apply accordingly.
Admission Requirements
For candidates choosing the Italian-taught cohort:
Since the programme will be delivered in Italian, and the English-taught courses of the Award begin at a basic communicative level (to strengthen proficiency prior to professional registration with the Medical Council), the Italian High School Diploma is deemed an appropriate entry requirement.
For international candidates:
Applicants must hold:
-
An EQF Level 4 qualification, granting access to higher education.
-
English proficiency at EQF Level 3, Grade C or higher; GCE Advanced Grade C or higher; IELTS 6.5 or equivalent.
All candidates will be required to attend an admission interview, either in person or via video call. The purpose of this interview will be to:
a) Verify the application documentation.
b) Ensure that the applicant and their family are fully aware of the requirements regarding residential tuition fees in Malta.
c) Confirm that the applicant has sufficient communicative competence in English to successfully undertake the Award and to communicate effectively in the Maltese social context.
Teaching
The pedagogy of the course will be a blend of interactive lectures with both theoretical and practical components. Lectures typically last 50 minutes, beginning with a lesson overview and concluding with a synthesis and a Q&A session. The practical component, integrated with the theoretical component, consists of weekly sessions of 110 minutes.
The programme will be delivered using multimedia tools. Relevant theoretical concepts will be presented in class, while discussions based on “problem-based issues” will be encouraged. These varied teaching approaches aim to develop each student’s ability to construct their own learning model, adapted to each programme topic.
Students will engage in practical activities through the digital resources provided by EIMS, making use of platforms and tools familiar to younger learners. They will become acquainted with the unit contents through a modern and interactive learning approach.
Collaborative teamwork will be organised through our online platform. Small group laboratory sessions will also be scheduled, where students can use study models and unit content in a hands-on learning environment.
Assessment
Assessment Format 1 (AF1)
| Marks component | Max. |
|---|---|
| Attendance, punctuality and student attitude in class/during learning (minimum acceptable attendance: 80%) | 10 |
| Interim evaluation through multiple-choice test | 45 |
| Final evaluation through multiple-choice test | 45 |
For units assessed under Format 1, a minimum score of 55 is required, of which at least 50 points must come from the two multiple-choice examinations (each of 90 minutes). A high attendance mark cannot compensate for a combined score lower than 50 in the two multiple-choice tests.
